What Does Your Skin Say About Your Health

Your skin doesn't just protect your body. It often reflects your health, serving as an early warning sign for a wide range of health conditions.

We explore some of the most common issues and give you some tips on how to support your skin and overall health.

Key Takeaways

  • Skincare and overall wellness are intimately linked, as skin health is closely linked with overall health.
  • Healthy skin helps support overall health, while a healthy mind and body support healthy skin.
  • In turn, various health conditions can manifest in the skin in many different ways.
  • Taking care of your skin and paying attention to any changes can help you stay on top of your overall health.

The Link Between Healthy Skin and Overall Health

Metta Murdaya, co-founder of JUARA Skincare, says:

"Our skin, the body's largest organ, is intimately connected to our overall health. Changes to your health are often reflected by changes to your skin. In turn, taking care of your skin can support overall wellness."

Skincare is often considered separately from overall wellness. But the two are actually very closely linked.

After all, your skin isn't separate from the rest of your body. The opposite. It's the largest organ, responsible for protecting you from potentially harmful substances and helping retain crucial moisture.

That's one of the reasons caring for your skin is so important. A damaged skin barrier often doesn't function properly, making you more vulnerable to allergens, irritants, and even harmful bacteria that can undermine overall health.

The relationship goes the other way, too. Your overall health can affect your skin health.

That might sound worrying, but it shouldn't be. Think of it like your skin telling you when something is wrong. After all, the first step toward recovering from a health issue is identifying the problem.

In other words, by taking care of and paying attention to our skin, we can also better support our entire body, inside and out. That's one of the core principles of holistic skincare, which views skincare in the context of overall wellness, mental and physical.

"Beauty is not skin-deep," explains JUARA co-founder Metta Murdaya. "It's a whole mind and body situation.… It really is inside-out, outside-in."

Skin Changes and Health Issues to Look Out For

Our skin can change in many different ways for many different reasons.

Skin issues can be caused by all kinds of things, from nutritional deficiencies to lack of sleep, underlying health issues to dry air. They can manifest in many different ways, from skin tags to acne to hair growth and more.

We'll cover some of the most common skin signs, explain what they can mean, and cover how you might address them.

Dry Skin

Dry skin is one of the most common skin issues people face. One survey found that 77% of people experience dry skin every year.¹

The main cause of dry skin is a loss of moisture. Put simply, if your skin loses more moisture than it gains through you drinking fluids or moisturizing, it will become dry. Cold weather, dry air, and sun damage can all contribute to dry skin.

Your skin can also get dry if you are dehydrated. This is more common than you might think; some surveys suggest three-quarters of Americans don't drink enough water.² If not addressed, dehydration can be a serious issue.³

Fortunately, in most cases, dehydration can be solved quite simply. If it's mild or even moderate, ensuring you drink enough fluids should help.

Addressing dry skin is also simple. The key lies in using a high-quality moisturizer. JUARA's Sweet Black Tea and Rice Moisturizer blends nutrient-rich oils and antioxidant-rich kombucha to intensely moisturize and nourish skin.

Itchy Skin

Itchiness is another common skin symptom. It's often caused by dryness, but can have other causes, too.

For example, allergens can often trigger itchiness. These might include pollen, animals, mold, soaps, chemicals, and even things like wool.⁵ Hormonal changes, such as menopause, can also trigger itchy skin, which is where a skin cream specifically designed for menopause can help.

One way to support itchy skin is by switching to gentler skincare products. JUARA's Sensica Gentle Gel Cleanser blends antioxidants, ceramides, and hydrating sodium hyaluronate to leave skin feeling fresh, balanced, and happy.

Sun Exposure

Sunlight is vital for overall health. Research shows it boosts your body's supply of vitamin D and can even boost mood.

However, research also shows that sunlight can damage the skin. UV radiation generates free radicals in the skin, which can cause all kinds of problems, including skin cancer.

Sun damage in the skin, or photoaging, can manifest in many ways. You might notice wrinkles, fine lines, freckles, or dark spots.

Sun damage can also cause skin cancer. While there are many kinds of skin cancer, the most common are squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma.

Different kinds of skin cancer can cause different symptoms, and these symptoms can appear differently on different kinds of skin. In general, you should look out for changes to your skin. That might mean something new appearing, like a spot, shiny bump, or rough scaly patch. It also could mean changes to an existing feature, like a mole that changes shape.

The best way to protect against sun damage is staying out of the sun. But as we mentioned, sunlight is also crucial for health. So when you do go out, make sure to wear sunscreen, even if it's cloudy out.

Antioxidants can also help protect against sun damage. These molecules neutralize free radicals, preventing them from causing damage. Consider incorporating antioxidant-rich products into your skincare routine and antioxidant-rich foods into your diet.

For example, JUARA's Miracle Tea Recovery Creme contains kombucha, a type of fermented tea that's rich in antioxidants. Our Radiance Vitality Oil contains antioxidant-rich passionfruit oil and stabilized vitamin C, a potent antioxidant that can help improve the appearance of skin discoloration.

Redness

Skin redness or red patches are another common issue. It can be caused by a wide range of things, including irritation and sun damage.

Various acute and chronic skin conditions can also cause redness, including: rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, shingles, skin infections, and lupus.

Some underlying health issues can also cause redness.

Other Changes

As we mentioned, the list of skin warning signs is too long for us to cover comprehensively. Many health conditions can cause changes to the skin, including heart disease, diabetes, liver disease, thyroid disorders, and autoimmune diseases. The most important thing is to pay close attention to your skin and look out for any unusual changes.

If you aren't sure, consult with a board-certified dermatologist or healthcare provider. They'll be able to help you figure out what your skin is trying to tell you and how you can support it and your overall health.

Conclusion

Our skin is intimately connected to our overall health. It can therefore offer important clues to potential health issues that may otherwise go unnoticed.

In turn, supporting skin health can help support overall health. Consider incorporating skin-supporting ingredients, like antioxidants, into your skincare routine.

Does Your Skin Reflect Your Health?
