There's nothing worse than splurging on a new lotion or cream, just for your skin to have a reaction to it. From allergies to irritation, there are many reasons why your skin might not agree with a skincare product or two.
To avoid these tragedies, it's important to patch test your skincare before applying it to the entirety of your face or body. Keep reading, and we'll tell you how and why you should perform a patch test.
Patch testing is important - but don't just take our word for it. Even the American Academy of Dermatology recommends patch testing before you add a new skincare product to your routine.
Here's how to do just that for lotions, creams, and serums:
Apply a small amount of your new skincare product to a place that you won't accidentally wipe or wash away. This can be the inside of the forearm or the bend of the elbow.
The product should cover a small area of skin- roughly the size of a quarter. Apply it as thickly as you would normally on your face.
Leave the product on your skin for as long as the directions recommend. Most creams, lotions, and serums will just be left on indefinitely. (Later, we'll tell you how to patch test a cleanser or wash).
Repeat these steps for the next 7 to 10 days, either once or twice a day, depending on the directions of the product.
If your skin starts to react to the product, whether that be a rash, irritation, or inflammation, wash off the product immediately. You can use a cool compress or petroleum jelly to help calm and nourish the skin.
How to Patch Test Cleansers, Washes, and Gels
Patch testing works very similarly for creams and cleansers. The only difference is that you won't leave on cleaners, gels, or washes.
Apply a small amount of your new skincare product.
The product should cover a small area of skin. Apply it as thickly as you would normally on your face.
Leave the product on your skin for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, wash off the product with cool or warm water.
Why Is Patch Testing Important?
If your skin has ever had a bad or unsavory reaction to a new skincare routine, then you understand why patch testing is important. Your new skincare product may contain ingredients that irritate or damage the skin, which can be particularly destructive or harmful if applied to your entire face or body.
But a patch test allows you to identify if a product is disagreeable to your skin before you use it all over your face.
Sometimes, new products or cosmetics can lead to allergic reactions, contact dermatitis, or skin irritation. It can feel like burning, redness, pain, or stinging, though the symptoms can vary from person to person.
Everyone's skin is unique. Some people have highly sensitive skin and need to be extremely cautious when applying skincare or cosmetics. Other people have extraordinarily resilient skin, and they can apply anything and everything to their face with little to no difference.
If you have sensitive, acne-prone, or dry skin, it's a good idea to look out for specific ingredients that can trigger an allergic reaction or inflammatory response.
Here are just a few:
Anthralin
Benzalkonium chloride
Tretinoin
Tetra-ethylene glycol diacrylate
Dithranol
Epichlorohydrin
Podophyllin
Propane sulphone
Other people may experience a skin reaction to ingredients like sulfates or phthalates. Even essential oils can cause a skin reaction to some.
The Food and Drug Administration classifies all common allergens in cosmetics into 5 categories: natural rubber, fragrances, preservatives, dyes, and metals.
Many skincare products or cosmetics contain fragrances like linalool, limonene, or citronellol that aren't bad in and of themselves, but to some, they can lead to irritation or inflammation.
Either use a fragrance-free product or a product with natural fragrance. All of our skincare products, like our body lotions and face serums, are either non-fragranced or naturally fragranced, meaning you can enjoy divine-scented skincare without worries or woes.
We also have perfume oils that are more forgiving and delicate than perfume sprays, making them ideal for those with sensitive or irritated skin.
You should perform a patch test in an area that is less exposed to irritants but still sensitive to active ingredients. The best place for a patch test is the inner forearm, behind the ear, or the bend of the elbow.
How Long Does It Take to Do a Patch Test for Skincare?
To perform a full patch test, you should apply your product regularly for 7 to 10 days, once or twice per day. This will give your skin plenty of time to adjust and react, which usually can't happen if you only apply the product one time.
Should You Wash Off a Patch Test?
It depends on the type of product. If it's a topical product, such as a cream, lotion, or serum, then no, you shouldn't wash it off so that your skin can absorb the product and react to it. But if it's a cleanser or wash, you should wash it off after leaving it on for 5 minutes.
