Clove Oil for Skin

Metta Murdaya, co-founder of JUARA Skincare, says:

"Cloves have been used in traditional medicine and wellness practices for thousands of years. You can use them to make toners and oils, which are great for supporting skin overnight."

You might think of clove as nothing more than an aromatic spice. In fact, it’s a powerful skincare and wellness ingredient that has been used around the world for thousands of years.

Cloves are actually dried flower buds. They grow on evergreen trees called Syzygium aromaticum. Clove trees are native to Indonesia.

In Indonesia, cloves have long formed a central part in an ancient botanical wellness tradition called Jamu. They are often blended into a tonic of the same name, which is used to promote overall well-being.

"Jamu is Indonesia's herbal healing tradition," explains JUARA co-founder Metta Murdaya. "Jamu is not just the drinks, but also the intention of how the drinks are made. You have healers and mothers and grandmothers who passed down the tradition from generation to generation, and so it's always made with love and care."

As cloves spread around the world, different communities recognized their potential. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, they were prized for their warming properties. Cloves quickly became one of the most sought-after spices by Europeans.

Potential Benefits of Clove Oil for Skin

Today, modern research has confirmed many of the potential benefits of cloves. The secret seems to lie in one specific compound, called eugenol. It's a phenol that gives cloves their unique aroma.

Eugenol also has many powerful anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. These make it an extremely useful ingredient in skincare.

Antioxidant Protection

Cloves have potent antioxidant properties. These come in large part from eugenol, which may compose up to 80% of clove essential oil. Research also suggests that other compounds in clove essential oil contribute to and even enhance its antioxidant properties.¹

These properties allow clove oil to protect the skin from reactive molecules called free radicals, which can damage skin cells in a process called oxidative stress. Free radical damage is a major cause of premature aging.

Acne

Research suggests that eugenol has anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties. Both of these mean it may be useful for those with acne-prone skin.

In part, that's because acne is often caused by bacteria. Cloves may be able to target those acne-causing bacteria. For example, a 2025 study found that a gel containing clove oil and curcumin (the active ingredient in turmeric) reduced acne marks and overall acne severity.² Another earlier study similarly found that a cream containing clove oil was "effective against microorganisms responsible for acne."³

Acne can also result in inflammation. Research has found that cloves have anti-inflammatory effects. One study found that a clove extract inhibited inflammatory responses triggered by acne.

Dark Spots and Brighter Skin

Changes to skin tone, like dark spots, are a common result of oxidative stress. Factors like UV light can often cause that damage. As we discussed, the antioxidant properties of cloves may help protect against oxidative stress.

Cloves are also widely used to achieve brighter skin and support a more even skin tone. Research suggests that eugenol may help protect against skin photoaging.

One aspect of photoaging is dark spots. Also called sun spots or age spots, these are often caused by overproduction of melanin. One study found that eugenol was able to inhibit melanin.

Soothing Skin

Cloves’ anti-inflammatory effects make it a great potential ingredient for soothing skin irritation. In one study, clove oil helped soothe skin itching.

Collagen Production

Collagen is crucial for skin health. It's a protein that helps keep skin elastic and tight. However, collagen production naturally declines with age.

Research suggests that cloves may help support collagen production. For example, one study found that a clove extract "significantly improved" levels of collagen and elastin, another protein necessary for healthy skin.

Interestingly, that study also found that the clove extract reduced the appearance of wrinkles and helped support skin hydration and skin barrier function.

How to Use Clove on Your Face

It's clear that cloves have plenty of potential benefits. People around the world use them to fade dark spots, calm irritation, smooth skin texture, tighten pores, and more.

But how exactly can you use it? After all, clove buds aren't exactly useful by themselves when it comes to skincare.

As you may have guessed, the trick lies in extracting the botanical compounds from those buds. There are a few ways you can do that.

The first way is to make a clove toner. To do that, all you need to do is boil several whole cloves in a couple of cups of water. After about 10 minutes, let the mixture cool and then strain it into a bottle for storage. It should last about a week in the refrigerator.

You can also add other ingredients to your toner mix, should you desire. For example, if you want to calm irritated skin, you might stir some aloe vera gel into your cooled toner. Another potent ingredient is turmeric, which you might remember as being combined with cloves in one of the studies we referenced.

One popular way to use a clove oil toner is by adding it to a spray bottle and spritzing a light layer over your skin before bed. Make sure to test it on a small area, like the inner arm, before applying it to more sensitive skin like the face. If you do have more sensitive skin, you might not want to use your toner every night.

Another popular way to use cloves is by making a clove essential oil. To do that, you need what's called a carrier oil. Almond or coconut oil are also good choices.

Crush your cloves and place them in a jar filled with your carrier oil(s) of choice. Keep the jar in a dark, cool place and let the oils infuse for at least a week. When your oil is ready, strain it and store it in a dark bottle.

If you already have clove essential oil, it's important not to place it on your skin directly. It's likely much more concentrated than the DIY essential oil we outlined. To be safe, make sure to dilute it with a carrier oil of your choice.

There are two popular ways to use your diluted clove oil. The first involves spreading a thin layer over your face (or the skin you want to support) before bed. As with the toner, make sure to patch test before applying clove oil to sensitive skin.

Alternatively, try dabbing a little bit of your diluted clove oil on specific areas, like pimples, before bed.

Products With Clove

Another way to incorporate cloves into your skincare routine is by purchasing professional products with cloves or clove oil.

There are a few benefits to this. The first is that you don't have to spend time making your own oil. You also don't have to worry about getting the measurements wrong, as high-quality products should be carefully tailored.

High-quality products should also combine cloves with other potent ingredients with their own potential skin-supporting benefits. JUARA formulates its products with botanical ingredients inspired by traditional wellness practices.

For example, JUARA has developed a proprietary blend of botanical actives called the Radiance Complex. It combines clove flower, turmeric, green tea, algae, and Indian gooseberry. These powerful natural ingredients help promote a bright complexion, deliver protective antioxidants, and visibly plump and hydrate skin.

JUARA's Radiance Enzyme Scrub contains this Radiance Complex. This brightening facial scrub is blended with apple fruit enzymes and natural physical exfoliants to gently polish skin and visibly improve tone, texture, and clarity.

The physical exfoliants are "very, very fine," explained JUARA co-founder Metta Murdaya, in conversation with dermatologist Dr. Arini Widodo. "They don't scratch up the skin. They're perfectly round.… They leave a nice, gentle feeling."

JAURA's Radiance Complex Plumping Serum also contains the Radiance Complex. It's combined with palm peptides, which are used to boost collagen and elastin production. This serum is made with turmeric and antioxidant-rich goji berries to help protect the skin from environmental stressors.

Conclusion

Cloves are a potent ingredient with plenty of potential benefits for skin health and overall wellness. You can use them to make your own toner or oil, which can be used before bed to address specific issues or support overall skin health. Alternatively, grab a product that uses clove, such as JUARA's Radiance Complex Plumping Serum.
