Spice up Leftover Eggnog for Health!

Metta Murdaya -

Eggnog

So the holidays are over, and now you have extra eggnog! What to do? One way to spice up (literally) a yummy but rich and indulgent beverage is to add a hint of spice that not only adds a zing, but also health benefits! Surprise your guests with a new take on a traditional drink, or enjoy it yourself. Antioxidant rich turmeric, spicy ginger, and a smidge of pepper, (which brings out the benefits of the turmeric) marry together to add an exotic twist to your post festivity recovery, inspired by the Indonesian herbal health tradition called Jamu. How’s that for a mix of the best of the East meets the best of the West?

Jamu Eggnog

Easy Spice Blend (serves 2 3/4 cup servings):

1 tsp Turmeric Powder
1/2 tsp Ginger Powder
1 pinch Black Pepper
2 tbsp water

1 1/2 cup eggnog (in a carton from the supermarket is fine.)

DIRECTIONS:

Blend together the Turmeric Powder, Ginger Powder, black pepper and water in a small pan and heat on med/low until mixture thickens, but do not let it  boil. Let the liquid cook for approximately 1-2 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool.

Pour eggnog into 2 cups (3/4 cups each.) Blend in up to 1 tbsp of the cooked spice mixture, or to taste. Start with 1 tsp and add more until desired flavor of grassiness with a little bit of spice is desired. Garnish with a cinnamon stick and/or a pinch of cinnamon.

Voila, a new original recipe based on 2 traditional drinks – and you’re in the know!
