Can Body Wash Be Used as Hand Soap?

Can Body Wash Be Used As Hand Soap

Run out of hand soap and don't know what to do? Don't worry.

We explain why body wash can clean your hands in a pinch and point you to products designed specifically for use as both body and hand wash.

Key Takeaways

  • Hand and body washes both generally contain surfactants, which are the compounds that help lift dirt and germs from your skin.
  • Therefore, body wash can be used as hand soap.
  • However, most body washes aren't specifically designed for handwashing, so they might not be ideal.
  • If you want a product that can be used for both body and hand washing, consider a professional hand and body wash formulation.

Using Body Wash as Hand Soap

Metta Murdaya, co-founder of JUARA Skincare, says:

"Body washes can often be used as hand soap in a pinch, but may not always be perfect. If you want flexibility, consider grabbing a body wash formulated specifically to be usable as hand soap, too."

We've all been there. It's time to wash our hands, and the hand soap is out.

Of course, we can't go without washing our hands. So the natural solution, assuming you're using a home bathroom, is to turn to the next best thing: body wash.

But is body wash really appropriate as a hand soap substitute?

Yes! At least, mostly.

As one dermatologist explained, hand soap and body wash "can be used interchangeably for cleaning."

However, there are some caveats. Most body washes aren't designed with hand washing in mind. They can be used in a pinch, but if you want true interchangeability, you should consider opting for a specially formulated hand and body wash.

After all, it's probably the product you'll use the most.

"The best skincare product for your skin," explains JUARA co-founder Metta Murdaya, "is the one that you're going to use every single day."

Body Wash vs. Hand Wash

Body wash can be used to clean hands because of special components called surfactants. These are included in body wash, hand soap, and other cleansing products, such as shampoo and even laundry detergent. Surfactants can even be used in face washes, though a gentle gel cleanser is more ideal if you have dry or sensitive skin.

Surfactants are the stuff that traps grease and dirt. They form tiny spheres called micelles that envelop muck. You can then wash it all away with water. The friction of rubbing your hands together also helps.

If body and hand wash have the same core ingredient, why are they different at all? Well, each is tailored for different purposes.

Body Wash

Body wash is intended to wash the body. That might sound obvious, but it's different from washing just the hands. For one thing, liquid body washes are often thicker and produce more foam because they have to cover a much larger area.

High-quality body washes may contain additional ingredients to support skin health. For example, JUARA's Candlenut Hydrating Shower Gel contains candlenut oil, which helps support skin hydration and is packed with essential fatty acids to support skin barrier function. It also contains sulfate-free coconut botanical cleansing agents to clean thoroughly without stripping skin.

If you have particularly sensitive skin, you might actually prefer using a shower gel body wash as hand soap for these reasons.

Hand Soap

Hand soap is, of course, intended to wash hands. Many soaps for hands are less gentle than those for bodies. They often have more alkaline pH levels and harsher surfactants, making them potentially more drying than gentler body washes.

However, hand soaps sometimes also contain anti-bacterial and anti-microbial ingredients. They're designed to remove germs and kill bacteria, which is important when preparing food or protecting yourself against pathogens.

Body washes often lack these ingredients.

These factors don't necessarily mean that hand soaps need to be harsher. Some high-quality hand soaps can be gentle and moisturizing.

Bar Soap

Both hand and body washes can come in liquid or solid formulations. If you prefer the latter, you might like bar soap.

Bar soaps offer a few advantages. In many cases, they are more cost-effective, longer-lasting, and eco-friendly. High-quality bar soaps can be just as luxurious as the best liquid body washes.

JUARA's Candlenut Bar Soap has a creamy, soft foaming action. It blends candlenut oil, moringa oleifera seed oil, mango seed butter, and shea butter to moisturize, calm, and protect skin on both the body and hands.

The Solution: Body Wash That's Also Hand Soap

So, most body washes can be used for handwashing. But that doesn't necessarily mean they are the best thing to use. Their formula wasn't designed for handwashing.

But what if you could design a single formula that works well for washing both bodies and hands?

That's exactly what JUARA's hand and body washes were designed to do. You can use them for a quick refresh at the sink or a long, indulgent shower.

They contain a blend of clever plant-based ingredients. A plant-derived, skin-identical humectant called saccharide isomerate acts as a 72-hour moisture magnet, helping to reduce dryness from frequent washing. Botanical cleansing agents and a conditioner leave skin clean, soft, and smooth.

The Candlenut Hand and Body Wash blends those potent ingredients with skin-supporting candlenut oil. Its unique fragrance turns a regular hand or body wash into a tropical escape.

"The candlenut is a very light fragrance," notes JUARA co-founder Metta Murdaya in conversation with dermatologist Dr. Arini Widodo. "It's nutritious. And the fragrance is kind of like a walk on the beach in the morning."

The Tiare Jasmine Hand and Body Wash blends them with an uplifting Tiare Jasmine fragrance. It's a fresh, floral blend with notes of tiare flower, jasmine, green bamboo, and palm fronds that evoke an Indonesian tea field at sunrise.

Conclusion

Body wash can usually be used in place of hand soap when needed. However, body washes and hand soaps usually have specific formulations designed for different purposes. If you want to use them interchangeably, it's best to grab a body and hand wash specifically designed for that.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Use Body Wash With Just My Hands?

Yes, you can wash your body with just your hands and your favorite body wash. A washcloth, loofah, or similar can help scrub away grime and exfoliate skin, but they aren't strictly necessary.

What Can I Use If I Don't Have Hand Soap?

If you've run out of hand soap, you can usually use body wash as a substitute. They both contain surfactants, which are the compounds that help lift away grime and bacteria from your skin.

Can I Turn Body Wash Into Hand Soap?

All you have to do to turn body wash into hand soap is transfer it into your hand soap container. If it's particularly thick, you might want to dilute it a little with water.
