How To Get Youthful Glowing Skin

While the fountain of youth has yet to be found, there are many ways we can keep that joie de vivre alive a little longer. Certain beauty and wellness rituals will rejuvenate our spirit along with our skin!

Let's look at 12 ways to get youthful, glowing skin.

1. Remember to apply sunscreen

Though it's hard to trace exact phrases that were uttered in the 1500s, the quote "prevention is better than cure" has often been attributed to the Dutch philosopher Desiderius Erasmus. This sentiment still holds true today.

When possible, it's better to do the things we can to prevent issues from arising, rather than play whack-a-mole as problems pop up.

As you likely know, sun damage is a major contributor to skin aging. Ultraviolet rays wreak havoc on our skin. They can lead to wrinkles and brown spots, and even cause skin cancer.

So when it comes to skincare, one of the best ways to protect our skin and give it a youthful appearance is to use sunscreen. It limits the damage done by the sun's ultraviolet rays.

Physical and mineral sunscreens (like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) deflect ultraviolet rays, while chemical sunscreens (that often include ingredients like oxybenzone or avobenzone) work by absorbing the rays and converting them into heat, which is then released from the body. Board-certified dermatologist Ramsey Markus, M.D., suggests mineral sunscreens if your skin is sensitive or acne-prone, or if you want a more eco-friendly option.

You should look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen as it protects against UVA and UVB rays. Generally, sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher is recommended.

2. Exfoliate dead skin cells & clear that complexion

A dull complexion can sometimes result from a combination of clogged pores and the collection of dirt and dead cells on the skin's surface. While washing your face is essential, there is another skin care step that's sometimes overlooked.

Even though there's a naturally occurring skin cell turnover process - in which dead skin cells are sloughed off and new cells take their place - we can nudge this cycle along. There are both physical and chemical exfoliation options in skin care that help deliver more youthful-looking skin.

A physical exfoliant removes this dirt and detritus from the surface of the skin manually with substances like sugar, walnut powder, or jojoba beads, while a chemical exfoliant dissolves the bonds between cells so they don't overstay their welcome as it were.

You'll often find a beta hydroxy acid such as salicylic acid or an alpha hydroxy acid like glycolic acid in exfoliating skin care products. However, products with enzymes sourced from fruits may be a slightly gentler option and still work great as wrinkle erasers.

JUARA Radiance Enzyme Scrub uses apple enzymes along with jojoba beads to help you exfoliate your way to radiant skin. It's gentle enough for any skin type and will help with overall appearance.

Its proprietary blend of botanicals is particularly powerful. Together, the turmeric, clove flower, Indian gooseberry, green tea, and algae provide antioxidant action, inhibit excess melanin creation, and hydrate skin. The vitamin C in this scrub also promotes skin brightening and is critical for collagen production.

Using it just a couple of times per week will give you a gorgeous, glowing complexion. And pairing it with a turmeric eye cream will make it go even further!

3. Take the time for toner

Another one of those beauty products that some people pass on (to their own detriment) is toner. Toner helps remove excess makeup and dirt while prepping the skin for subsequent products.

Some contain ingredients like glycerin, which is a humectant that makes for hydrated skin. They may also have anti-aging properties like antioxidants and vitamins that protect and heal skin.

A lot of toners help treat dry and stressed skin.

If you don't already have a toner in your skin care routine, there's no time like the present.

4. Find a moment for a face mask

A rejuvenating mask can be a nice way to relax and help yourself to some younger-looking skin.

There are moisturizing masks with active ingredients like hyaluronic acid, anti-aging masks with vitamin c, and masks for extra exfoliation with lactic acid. There's also a lot of overlap between these different mask types, since skin-loving ingredients such as aloe vera have hydrating benefits that help with a number of issues.

Vitamin C is another one of those all-star ingredients since it's a powerful antioxidant that fights against environmental aggressors. It evens out skin tone and diminishes the look of age spots, fine lines, and wrinkles. In addition, it acts as a gentle exfoliant and speeds up cell turnover.

Face masks can yield virtually the same results as night creams and serums, and there's no shortage of options when you want to treat yourself to something new and optimize that glow.

There are many masks to moisturize, lighten dark spots, and deal with other signs of aging.

5. Incorporate natural oils in your skincare

Most of us already use a daily moisturizer, but might some of us be missing out on the many benefits of natural face and body oils?

You may be under the impression that oils are only for certain skin types, or leave a greasy residue behind, but there are plenty of oils that have a non-greasy texture and help you to have healthy skin. Essential oils and other natural oils benefit the skin in unique ways.

If you're dealing with dry skin, you have an extra incentive to give these oils a try. Some oils, like the Radiance Vitality Oil by JUARA, help with the skin's lipid barrier by delivering moisture deep into the pores.

The fatty acids from the candlenut and avocado oil reduce swelling and inflammation. The vitamin E in these natural oils helps with moisture retention, enabling healthier overall processes, including skin cell regeneration.

The coconut oil and turmeric root extract in this Jamu-inspired recipe are calming and soothing. Radiance Vitality oil also has five flavor berry and vitamin c to firm, tighten, and brighten the skin.

These are just some of the reasons this oil helps your face look fresh, youthful, and radiant.

And since your skin doesn't stop at your face, we'd be remiss if we didn't mention JUARA's beautifying Kartini Body Oil, which is moisturizing, firming, and feels fantastic. It contains plumeria flower, passion fruit oil, Moringa oleifera, turmeric oil, coconut oil, candlenut oil, and more.

It's luminous, lightweight, and luxurious. Plus, it has a bounty of skin benefits.

Both coconut oil and candlenut oil are associated with boosting collagen, which is a protein that provides strength and support for the skin. Since our body slows its collagen production as we age, any additional help in this area is much appreciated.

The Kartini Body oil also supports the skin barrier - that uppermost level of the epidermis that does the heavy lifting of keeping moisture in and all those irritants and toxins out.

When signs of aging start showing up front and center, you can scoot them off stage with a little help from natural oils.

6. Eat well & stay hydrated

It's important to remember that having healthy, glowing skin isn't only about what you layer on top - or scrub off with an enzyme mask. What you put into your body counts as much as what you put on it.

There aren't exact answers when it comes to eating and you'll notice even experts disagree on specifics. The best bet is to try to consume a mix of healthy, fresh foods and incorporate a wide variety of nutritious options.

The protein in meat has high concentrations of amino acids, which your body requires to produce collagen. But if you don't eat red meat, there are other ways to get the goods, either through supplements or a combination of foods.

To support skin health, you should also eat antioxidant-rich foods like broccoli, spinach, and sweet potatoes. There are some foods, like avocado, plain yogurt, and honey that are great for you whether they go in your belly or directly on your skin. So, if you ever start a food fight, choose wisely!

It's important to aim for balance, but that doesn't mean you have to swear off sweets or avoid alcohol altogether. Avoid drinking too much alcohol, which can cause dehydration, and try to down a lot of water instead. And importantly, if you stray from these guidelines, forgive yourself, and try to do a bit better the next day.

7. Exercise for a healthy body and radiant skin

Staying healthy will make it easier to look great on the outside and get that glowing skin you desire. Exercise is critical for good health and is even an essential part of your radiant skin care regimen

Moving your body for extended periods of time helps you stay fit and increases blood flow. Both are essential for having youthful-looking skin, especially as we age.

Even doing a forward fold can bring fresh, oxygenated blood to your face and give you a beauty boost. Here are some yoga poses that can help you get moving and may even help get you that glow:

8. Try a gentle face massage or face yoga

Speaking of yoga and increasing blood flow, there are even exercises you can do to help relax and smooth your face.

Using your fingers to lightly tap on your skin and gently massage the muscles of your head and face has helped many people improve their appearance.

Remember to be gentle and seek out some guidance if you are just getting started with face yoga or massage.

9. Wash your face before calling it a night

When you're feeling exhausted, flopping on your bed and falling asleep is sometimes the only thing that sounds feasible. And of course, we all have those kinds of days.

However, as much as it might not seem like a big deal, washing your face before heading to bed is a great habit to have. If you do it regularly, you already know. Just like brushing your teeth, it's one form of self-care that's pretty essential.

When you don't wash your face, dirt and oils can mix with sebum and clog pores. This can cause breakouts, or just dull your complexion.

Give yourself the gift of a great face wash, like JUARA Rice Facial Cleanser, and level up your nighttime (and daytime) skincare ritual.

This cleanser contains soothing rice bran, coconut botanical cleansing agents, gently exfoliating apple extract, and hydrating plum fruit extract.

It cleanses and softens skin and promotes healing and long-lasting hydration. All of this is a must for dry or mature skin.

10. Sleep well to look well

It may sound a bit old-fashioned, but there's a certain truth to the often-shared advice about getting one's beauty sleep. In fact, there was a study conducted in which the participants who only got a few hours of sleep a night looked less attractive to others.

Most sleep specialists agree that getting somewhere in the ballpark of eight hours of sleep per night is ideal. Of course, it will vary depending on the individual, and there are always those delicious naps where you can pick up the slack if you don't get to bed on time.

If it seems like you wake up with new wrinkles every morning, try switching out your pillowcase. Splurge on a pillowcase made of silk or sateen, and see if it makes a difference for you. Softer pillowcases can be less abrasive and minimize the skin inflammation that can make skin look older.

Associate clinical professor of dermatology Dr Mona Gohara says softer pillowcases are less abrasive

11. Get creative with foundations and highlighters

Makeup can be fun and sometimes even add a layer of sun protection. If not, it can still add a layer of fun and give you a boost of confidence that makes you feel good.

Try to find makeup that's moisturizing or otherwise beneficial for the skin, so it can pull double duty. A lot of tinted oils or mineral foundations will do the trick.

If you're going for a little extra glow, why not reach for a highlighter? You can amplify that dewy, luminous look you've created through good skincare choices and other healthy habits.

12. Do something that brings you joy!

Whether it's hugging a tree, finger painting with toddlers, or dancing around in your living room, the best way to look like you're glowing from the inside out is to start from the inside. Your emotional state  doesn't stay tucked neatly inside.

So after you've shouted along to a song in your car, or cried with an old friend on the phone, find a ray of light to stand in, and soak up that sun.
